The DOE-funded ASC/Alliance Center for Thermonuclear Flashes in the Department
of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago (the Flash Center)
invites applications for Postdoctoral Scholar positions in Computational
Science.
The Flash Center is a multidisciplinary Center whose primary goal has been to
develop a highly capable multiphysics numerical simulation code (FLASH), and
apply it to the problem of Type Ia supernovae, including a rigorous validation
program. The Center also distributes the FLASH code to a wide user community;
by our estimates there are approximately 600 internal and external users of
the code, with over 300 papers published that use the code. The Flash Center
has recently secured funding to extend the capabilities of the FLASH code to
enable simulations of High Energy Density Physics; we are looking for
post-doctoral candidates to work towards developing these capabilities
Successful applicants will build numerical methods and code modules to model
physical phenomena associated with HEDP. They will also be a part of the
Center's vigorous scientific program that involves frequent interactions with
theorists and experimentalists from the National Laboratories, and
collaborations with leading academic centers in the US and abroad. A PhD by
the date of appointment and experience in applied mathematics and
computational fluid dynamics is required. Good communication skills and the
ability to work in a team environment are also desirable.
The positions are for one year with the possibility of renewal. The positions
are for immediate employment.
To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a
brief description of research interests, and the names of and letters
from three references. Electronic sumbmissions are preferred. Please
refer to 'Postdoctoral Scholar in Computational Science' when applying. Apply
by email to eder@flash.uchicago.edu.

Be a part of the team that develops and maintains FLASH, a state-of-the-art
computational code for numerical simulations of exploding stars and for
solving other astrophysical problems. Assist in building computational
tools, collaborate with and help computational scientists and staff.
Primary Responsibilities:
The percentages are only estimates because of the nature of this work.
80 % Development and maintenance of FLASH.
10 % Problem solving and support for internal FLASH users
10 % Support for external users of FLASH
Qualifications:
Professional ability to create, maintain and support high-quality scientific
software is required. Comprehensive knowledge of C/C++ and
Fortran77/Fortran90 programming under UNIX and good knowledge of numerical
methods is required. Knowledge of parallel computing and distributed
architectures is preferred. Some collaborative skills, including the ability
to work well with other divisions, laboratories, and universities, and good
oral and written communication skills are highly desirable.
The requisite level of knowledge and skills typically achieved through an
advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, or Physical
Sciences, or a bachelors degree or higher in Computational Science is required.
